Pumps:

It is important to remember that not all pumps are created equally. I know pumps are expensive, but what most people don’t realize or factor in is the operating costs, longevity, and the environment you are putting it in.

The cheaper pumps are usually the sump style and are really only designed to be run temporarily. Running this style of pump 24/7 can be costly to the point you will really notice it on your utility bill and they can have a shorter life.

Many pumps (even some pond pumps) are really not designed for a dirty pond environment and plug up very easily. The operating costs of pond pumps can also vary a lot depending on brands and sizes.

Filter Systems:

A filter is designed to remove excess nutrients and help keep your water feature a healthy ecosystem. The pump sucks in the nutrients (rotting organic matter and fish poop), which get caught up in the filter media, and then the backwash feature allows you to pump out these extra nutrients.

We have worked with just about every filter system you can imagine, and unfortunately, most home and store-bought systems are not effective. An efficient filter has a backwash system that squeezes the sponges, and all the collected nutrients should come out of the backwash hose looking like chocolate milk. This is not the industry norm, a lot of filters either scrape the sides of the sponges, use water flow to try and push muck out from plastic balls, or worse, no real backwash mechanism.

We have only found one filter that is effective and is the only one we will install. Even the filter we use, we have to modify it to make it work better and be less problematic. This filter also has a UV system to help keep your water clear.

It is very important to know that if you get a filter, it HAS to be backwashed every week if not more, otherwise the filter gets full and the muck just goes back into the pond.

Pond Heaters:

Designed to keep a small hole in the ice during winter so the gasses can escape and not make the pond toxic to the point that it kills the fish.

Air Pumps:

  • SummertimeAdding air to the pond has several advantages. Oxygen levels are lower when the water gets warmer so your fish really appreciate the extra oxygen and circulation.
  • Wintertime: Air will help let the gasses escape and, when combined with a heater, will give you a second level of safety if you have a failure with one. It is important that the air stones are brought up to 6 to 12 inches below the surface in fall as you don’t want the cold air being pumped down to the bottom where the fish are trying to keep warm, and the stones are much more effective when near the surface

Pond Nets:

My advice, buy a good net and you won’t be disappointed. The amount of butterfly nets out there trying to get wet leaves out of ponds is way higher than you can imagine, and you cannot efficiently do what is required.

Ideally, two kinds of nets are needed: one with an open mesh for removing wet leaves and one with a fine mesh for removing muck, grass clippings, needles, and small particulates.

You have to get that organic matter out of the pond; otherwise, algae is going to take over. Save yourself some frustration and buy the proper equipment. Nets can be purchased through Dragonfly for $50.00 each plus GST.

Ionizers:

We’re Sorry, but we do not use, recommend, or repair ionizers due to the toxic copper residue they leave in ponds.

Pond Plants:

Pond plants transform a pond into a beautiful oasis. We have several different varieties, from tropicals to hardy pond plants. We bring them to your pond, suggest planting options and plant them for you.

Float Systems:

We install float systems that automatically top up ponds. It is best to have the system on its own irrigation zone.
